Is anyone else freaked the fuck out about the irreversible damage we are inflicting on our planet? In particular, about this photo?
You’re looking at this year’s projected number one source of imported oil to the US. This is a photo of the Alberta tar sands in Canada. There oil companies destroy vast amounts of forest in a process that environmental expert Naomi Klein describes as “terrestrial skinning”.
The surface mutilation caused by this endeavor can be seen from space. The destruction isn’t limited to the land; local indigenous people are reporting rapid increases in cancer rates. The oil extraction produces an average of THREE times as much greenhouse gas emissions as conventional oil production.
We must call on the oil companies and our governments that regulate and fund these projects to END THE EXTRACTION OF OIL FROM TAR SANDS IMMEDIATELY. Use the money saved from planet suicide to fund technological advancements in renewable energy and create jobs rebuilding our forests and constructing cars that run without oil. We have the power to change the course of our environment if we demand that change now!
